Free Construction Takeoff Tools Built for Speed
Every measurement tool contractors need to go from construction drawings to accurate quantities. Auto scale detection, snap to content precision, organized groups, and one click export. No training required, no bloatware, no contracts.
Lines & Polylines
Measure straight lines for individual dimensions, or draw connected multi segment polylines for piping, conduit, curbing, fencing, and any other linear run. Hold Shift to lock to 15 degree increments for precise horizontal, vertical, and diagonal segments. Running totals update in real time as you add segments. Press Backspace to undo the last point, or Enter to complete the polyline.
Count Tool
Place markers with a single click to count fixtures, outlets, sprinkler heads, windows, posts, or any item on the plan. Pick from five distinct symbol shapes so different item types stay visually separated. Running count totals update automatically as you place markers, giving you an instant bill of quantities for anything that needs to be tallied.
Areas & Rectangles
Trace the outline of any region on your plans and get instant square footage using precise polygon calculations. Handles irregular shapes, L-shaped rooms, jogs, and complex footprints. The rectangle tool lets you drop quick measurements with two clicks, and holding Shift constrains it to a perfect square. Running totals per group let you see cumulative area at a glance.
Auto Scale Detection
When you upload a PDF, Easy Takeoffs scans the drawing for printed scale notations like 1/4" = 1'-0" or 1:100 and sets the calibration automatically. If the scale is not printed on the sheet, choose from a library of common architectural, engineering, and metric scales, or draw between two known points for manual calibration. Each page can hold its own scale, and the tool warns you when a page has no scale notation.
Full Resolution PDFs
Drop any PDF plan set into your browser and every page renders at full resolution. Multi page files, large format sheets, fine line weights, and small dimension callouts all display exactly as drawn. The rendering engine runs on a Web Worker with OffscreenCanvas, so the interface stays responsive even with complex drawings.
Snap to Content
The snap engine extracts vector geometry directly from your PDF and locks your cursor to walls, corners, midpoints, and edges as you measure. Visual indicators show exactly what you are snapping to. Snap sensitivity is adjustable, and you can toggle the system on or off by pressing S.
Measurement Groups
Organize your measurements with color coded groups. Choose from eight distinct colors and create groups like Flooring, Electrical, or Demolition. Each group tracks its own running totals for length, area, and count. Toggle group visibility on the canvas to focus on specific scopes, and move measurements between groups as your takeoff evolves.
Any Device
Easy Takeoffs runs in any browser with a responsive design that adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops. Touch gestures like pinch to zoom and two finger pan work naturally on mobile devices. No install, no updates, no platform lock in. Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on any operating system. A full set of keyboard shortcuts keeps your hands off the mouse when speed matters, with single key presses to switch tools and a 50 action undo history.
One Click Export
Export an annotated PDF with all your measurement markups drawn directly on the original plans, or export a CSV spreadsheet with every measurement organized by group, complete with subtotals and units. Both exports give you everything you need to plug quantities straight into your estimating workflow.
Cloud Auto Save
Every change saves to the cloud automatically so your work is always current. A save status indicator shows exactly when your last save completed. If you close the tab by accident, a beforeunload save captures your latest changes. Access your projects from any device and never worry about a single hard drive holding your only copy.
Labels
Add editable text labels to any measurement so you know exactly what each line, area, or count represents. Labels are visible on the canvas while you work and carry through to your PDF and spreadsheet exports.
Annotations
Add text notes, arrows, rectangles, and ellipses directly on your plans. Choose from six colors to distinguish callouts, RFIs, and field notes. Drag to reposition, double click text to edit in place, and everything exports to your annotated PDF.
Why Easy Takeoffs vs Traditional Tools
See how Easy Takeoffs stacks up against manual takeoffs and expensive legacy software.
| Manual Takeoffs | Expensive Software | Easy Takeoffs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Rulers, scale sticks, printed plans | $2,000 to $5,000+ per year per seat | Free, no contracts or per seat fees |
| Setup Time | Zero, but every takeoff is slow | Hours of training, IT setup, onboarding | Sign up and measure in under a minute |
| Accuracy | Your eyesight, a steady hand, and a scale ruler | High, but buried behind complexity | Sub pixel precision with snap to content |
| Scale Calibration | Manual calculation from printed scale bars | Manual entry or basic detection | Auto detection from PDF with fallback options |
| Measurement Tools | Ruler and highlighter | Full suite, steep learning curve | Line, polyline, area, rectangle, count |
| Organization | Color coded highlighters and sticky notes | Folders and layers, complex setup | Color coded groups with running totals |
| Export | Hand written notes or manual spreadsheet entry | PDF, Excel, integrations (at a price) | Annotated PDF and CSV with one click |
| Data Safety | One lost printout away from starting over | Local files, manual backups | Auto save to cloud, never lose work |
| Accessibility | Physical desk with printed plans | Desktop only, usually Windows only | Any device, any browser, cloud synced |
