How It Works

How to Count Items on PDF Construction Plans

1

Upload Your Plans

Drop your PDF into the browser. Every page renders at full resolution. Multi page plan sets load just like singles.

2

Set the Scale

Easy Takeoffs reads the scale notation from your drawing automatically. No match? Pick from common architectural and engineering scales, or calibrate between two known points.

3

Pick a Symbol Shape

Choose from five shapes: circle, square, triangle, diamond, or plus. Assign each shape to a different item type so outlets don't get mixed in with light fixtures.

4

Click to Count

Click each item on the plan. Your running total updates instantly. Group related counts together, add labels, and export when you are done.

Why Accurate Counts Matter

A count takeoff is the foundation of every material order on a construction project. Miss ten sprinkler heads and the fire protection rough in stalls while you wait for a second shipment. Double count a bank of receptacles and you eat the cost of returns and restocking fees. The numbers you pull from the construction plans drive purchase orders, labor estimates, and bid totals.

Easy Takeoffs gives you a visible marker on every item you count so you always know what has been tallied and what has not. Running totals update with each click, group colors keep different item types separated, and everything exports to a spreadsheet the moment you are done. No tally marks on scratch paper, no mental math, no second count to make sure the first one was right.

Features

More Than a Click Counter

The count tool does more than keep a tally. Here is everything it gives you.

Five Symbol Shapes

Circle, square, triangle, diamond, and plus. Assign a different shape to each item type on the same drawing. On a busy electrical plan, count outlets with circles and light fixtures with triangles. The shapes are large enough to see at any zoom level and different enough to tell apart instantly. No more squinting at identical dots trying to remember which ones are outlets and which ones are switches.

Groups with Running Totals

Create a measurement group for each item type. Outlets in one group, light fixtures in another, switches in a third. Each group gets its own color and its own running total. As you click to place markers, the count for that group updates automatically. You always know exactly how many of each item you have without adding anything up by hand.

Multi Page Support

Most commercial plan sets run 20, 30, or even 50 pages. The count tool works across every page in your PDF. Navigate between sheets and your markers stay exactly where you placed them. Group totals combine counts from all pages, so a 30 page electrical set gives you one total for outlets, one for fixtures, and one for everything else.

CSV and PDF Export

When your count is done, export everything with one click. The CSV file lists every measurement by group with its label, symbol shape, and page number. Drop it into Excel, Google Sheets, or your estimating software for an instant bill of quantities. The annotated PDF export draws your count markers directly on the original plans so you have a visual record to attach to a bid or hand to the field.

The Problem

Why Manual Counting Fails on Real Projects

Every contractor has been here. Here is what goes wrong when you count by hand on paper or screen.

You Lose Your Place

You are 47 outlets into a busy commercial floor plan. Someone walks over with a question. By the time you look back at the drawing, you cannot remember if that duplex in the corridor was number 47 or 48. Nothing on the plan tells you which items have already been counted. So you start from the top of the page and count them all again.

Items Get Counted Twice

On a dense electrical plan with 200 receptacles per floor, it is easy to count the same one twice. Without a visible mark on every item, your brain loses track of what has been tallied and what has not. Ten extra outlets at $15 each is $150 straight off your margin. Multiply that across every floor and every device type and the numbers start to hurt.

Items Get Missed Entirely

Symbols hide in crowded corners, behind grid lines, and inside enlarged details that live on a different page. You count every sprinkler head on the mechanical plan and miss the six that only appear on the reflected ceiling plan detail. You will not find out until the rough in, and by then the damage is done.

There Is No Audit Trail

Your project manager asks you to justify the count. You point to your notepad. There is no record of where each item was counted, which page it was on, or who counted it. If the number gets questioned during bid review, the only option is to count everything again from scratch.

PDF Counting Tool Questions

Upload your PDF to Easy Takeoffs, set the scale on the drawing, select the count tool, pick a symbol shape, and click on each item. The running total updates with every click. When you are finished, export your counts to a CSV spreadsheet or annotated PDF.

Yes. Easy Takeoffs is a completely free PDF counting tool for construction plans. There is no trial period, no credit card required, and no per seat fees. You get five symbol shapes, running totals, color coded measurement groups, and CSV export at no cost. It runs in your browser with nothing to install.

Upload your electrical drawings to Easy Takeoffs and set the scale. Select the count tool and assign a different symbol shape to each fixture type. Click each symbol on the plan. The tool tracks separate totals per measurement group, so your outlet count stays separate from your fixture count. Export everything to CSV when you are done.

Adobe Acrobat does not have a counting tool. You can place stamp annotations manually, but there is no running tally or automatic totals. Easy Takeoffs is a free alternative built specifically for counting items on construction plans, with running totals, five symbol shapes, measurement groups, and spreadsheet export.

Easy Takeoffs offers five symbol shapes: circle, square, triangle, diamond, and plus sign. Each shape can be assigned to a different measurement group with its own color. This lets you count multiple item types on the same drawing and tell them apart at a glance.

A count takeoff is the process of going through construction drawings and counting every instance of a specific item. Electrical contractors count receptacles, switches, and light fixtures. Plumbers count fixture rough ins. Fire protection contractors count sprinkler heads. The totals feed directly into material orders and labor estimates. A count takeoff done on paper uses tally marks and a notepad. A digital count takeoff like Easy Takeoffs places a visible marker on each item so nothing gets missed or double counted.

Yes. Easy Takeoffs supports multi page PDFs. Your count markers stay on every page where you placed them, and group totals combine counts from all pages automatically. A 30 page electrical plan set gives you one running total for outlets, one for light fixtures, and one for each group you create. You do not have to add up page by page totals yourself.

Upload your fire protection or reflected ceiling plan to Easy Takeoffs and set the scale. Select the count tool, pick a symbol shape like the circle, and click each sprinkler head on the drawing. The running total updates with every click. If sprinkler heads appear on multiple sheets, navigate between pages and keep counting. Your total follows you across the entire plan set. Export your final count to a CSV spreadsheet when you are done.
